Gold & Silver Storage | Home Safe vs Vault

Home / Guides / Gold & Silver Storage | Home Safe vs Vault

Storage is the unsexy part of bullion ownership. Get it wrong and you risk theft, water damage, or losing access to your stack.

Home Storage

A fireproof safe rated TL-15 or higher, bolted to the floor in an inconspicuous location, with backup off-site storage of inventory records. Pros: instant access, no storage fees, total privacy. Cons: theft risk, insurance complications (most homeowner policies cap precious metals at $1,000-2,500 unless separately scheduled).

Bank Safe Deposit Box

Low cost, reasonably secure, but FDIC does not insure contents and box access is limited to bank hours. After 9/11 and during COVID, banks restricted access at various points. Document inventory thoroughly.

Private Vaults

Companies like Brink's, IDS of Delaware and the Texas Bullion Depository store allocated bullion in your name. Costs 0.5-1% per year. Used for IRA storage by law; popular for large non-IRA holdings.

Distributed Storage

For larger stacks, split holdings: some at home, some in a bank box, some in a private vault. Reduces single-point-of-failure risk.
