Tenth full series (2026). Phase-one release with a shorter denomination set. Largest US retail metals market, so expect more shops to experiment with stocking notes.

California series overview

California Goldbacks released in 2026 as the tenth full state series. Phase one ships a shorter denomination set (including the 1/4, 1, and 5, plus a 3 Goldback Limited Early Release), with more denominations expected later. California's dealer density is unmatched, but sales tax on bullion is threshold-based, so confirm tax treatment on smaller ticket purchases.

Denominations note.

Phase one focuses on a shorter lineup (reported as 1/4, 1, and 5, plus a 3 Goldback LER). Additional denominations are expected in later phases.

For artwork keys, serial checks, and mintage figures, use the official Goldback Safe. If a figure is not published there, treat it as unknown.

Practical buy and sell tips

Do not assume every California coin shop stocks Goldbacks yet. Ask for current series phase and whether the note is an LER. For mintage tables and artwork keys, use goldback.com tools; we do not invent mintage numbers here.

  • Check the daily Goldback exchange rate before you negotiate.
  • Ask the dealer for both ask and bid on the same denomination.
  • Prefer notes you can inspect in hand: polymer feel, reverse image, serial clarity.
  • Separate "network spend" buys from "collectible premium" buys so you do not overpay for melt.

Where California Goldbacks fit vs bullion

In California, Goldbacks are a voluntary local-currency product inside the largest US precious-metals retail market. They will not beat a 1 oz bar on premium. They can beat a 1 oz bar on divisibility when a merchant already accepts the network.
